Identifying Options
With requirements documented, it is now time to build a list of options. This is the divergent part of the process where the goal is to cast a wide net. It is an opportunity to learn more about the solution space. How are others approaching the problem? What new options have emerged in recent years?
Building the list of options can be overwhelming but can also be the most fun part of the process because of the open-ended learning that happens.

Here are tips for successfully building out the list of Options.
- Start open minded to get an exhaustive list. Allow input from all members within the team. Every team member, stakeholder, or expert in your network may have worked with a different vendor or technology. Identify this experience around you, and represent their input as options for consideration in later sections even if you don’t believe the option is likely to be selected in the current scenario. Avoid debate at this early stage.
- Research multiple platforms to get options. Instead of just going with options you are aware of, use platforms like G2 to find alternatives to the readily known options. For example if you are aware of Auth0 as Identity provider, search online for “Alternatives for Auth0” and you will find a multitude of other options. List them to get started. Gartner Magic Quadrants™ can be another good source for options and insights.
- Consider build as an option. Every project is unique so it is possible that your requirements cannot be met by an existing solution. You may need to build it. If this is even a remote possibility, list it as an option. Feasibility and strategic alignment will be key considerations when this option is included.
